New Fellows dive into their study of the South Bronx

It’s just their second week at Coro and the twelve Fellows are already knee-deep in the public affairs waters of New York City. The newest cohort of Fellows spent their first week canvassing the landscape of the South Bronx with the help of Coro alum Noah Franklin (Leadership New York XVIII), who opened the office of the Bronx Borough President to them. To conclude their study of the South Bronx, the group hosted a presentation on the “logic” of the region at the Bronx County Courthouse on Monday, September 10.

Deep in the Rotunda of the Courthouse, the Fellows presented their findings, “If I Can’t Find a Way, I’ll Make One: A Logic Study of the South Bronx.” The hour-long presentation examined such neighborhoods as Hunts Point, Melrose, Mott Haven, and Morrisania, in the context of various topics, such as the Hunts Point Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion, community health centers, charter schools and the origins of hip-hop. The Fellows also featured two local organizations: Bronx Community Solutions, an initiative of the Center for Court Innovation, which is headed by Fellows alumnus Greg Berman (FPNY 1992-93), and Sustainable South Bronx (SSB), founded by Coro alumna Majora Carter (Leadership New York XI). SSB focuses on creative solutions to key problems facing the South Bronx.

With their hearts still racing from their challenging first exercise, the Fellows have now begun exploring our City’s government. Their placements include: Brooklyn Borough President’s Office, Bronx Borough President’s Office, Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Small Business Services, New York City Council, and the Office of the Public Advocate.

For more information on the Fellows Program in Public Affairs, contact Eddie Shiomi, Director of the Fellows Program.

Youth Ambassadors wow the audience in their Final Presentations

“A lot of people say that they already know how to get along with others but it really is a lot harder than it appears to be. Through Exploring Leadership I have learned that working as a group carries a lot more benefits than working alone. I have also learned that although the NYC public education system may seem like it is not doing as well as it could be, it is a really big and complex system, and that you can’t make one decision to fix all of its problems.”

- Ashley Brown, Grade 11, Urban Academy, 2007-08 Youth Ambassador

Councilmember Robert Jackson gets first-hand insight from Youth Ambassador Joey Josma to bring back to the NYC Council Education Committee

On August 23rd, Coro’s “Youth Ambassadors” – 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students from four small public high schools in NYC – completed the intense, packed summer phase of the Exploring Leadership program. In the culminating event of the summer, the 24 Youth Ambassadors presented what they learned over the summer and their recommendations for reform of the City’s school system. In groups of 5, they delivered formal 15-minute presentations, each focusing on a different NYC education policy issue they had explored that summer.

The presentations were richly informative, and the audience – a group of about 80 community members, including educators, politicians, family, and friends – asked scores of questions of the Youth Ambassadors. The audience was eager to learn more about school safety, high stakes testing, immigration and education, charter schools, and public school funding.

Prior to the presentations, audience members mingled with the Youth Ambassadors. They learned about each individual’s personal growth, through reading their “Reflection on Learning” essays, and examining their visual displays and portfolios – all of which showcased the work they produced and skills and knowledge they gained this summer.

“One important learning I gained was to back up my ideas with facts as often as possible instead of depending solely on assumptions,” wrote Jilliun Benjamin, an 11th grade student at School for Democracy and Leadership, in her Reflection on Learning essay. “Before I learned this, I used to have strong opinions about certain topics and they used to be based on a lot of other opinions or assumptions. Now I have learned to dig deeper for the facts and not only look at the surface of things.”

The summer was indeed a rigorous and exciting phase of the program: the Youth Ambassadors completed internships at an educational organization, learned about NYC education policy, interviewed dozens of education leaders across the city, and gained a mastery of a host of leadership skills such as public speaking and effective group work.

While the summer phase has ended, the 2007-08 Exploring Leadership program has barely begun. This week the Youth Ambassadors begin the school year phase of the program, during which they apply their learning from this summer to address an educational issue that affects their schools. Over the course of the school year, the young people will survey their school community about the issue, conduct peer education workshops, and organize their peers to take action to address the issue.

For more information about Exploring Leadership, please contact Laura Shmishkiss, Program Director of Exploring Leadership.
